The Worst Habits for Your Hair

The Worst Habits for Your Hair

We all have our bad habits. Some of us bite our nails, and others can't seem to quit smoking. But did you know that some of your everyday habits could wreak havoc on your hair? Here are some of the worst practices for your hair and what you can do to fix them.

1. Brushing your hair when it's wet

This is one of the worst things you can do for your hair. When your hair is wet, it's in its weakest state and is more prone to breakage. Instead, please wait until your hair is dry before you brush it. If you must brush it while it's wet, use a wide-tooth comb and be gentle.

2. Not brushing your hair enough

Brushing your hair is essential for two reasons. First, it helps distribute the natural oils from your scalp down the length of your hair. This helps keep your hair moisturized and healthy. Second, brushing helps to remove tangles and knots, which can lead to breakage. Aim to brush your hair at least once a day and more if it's particularly tangled or oily.

3. Using hot tools on wet hair

This is a big no-no. Just like brushing your hair when it's wet, using hot tools on wet hair can cause severe damage. The heat from the tools will cause the water in your hair to evaporate, leading to dryness, frizz, and, ultimately, breakage. Always make sure your hair is completely dry before using any hot tools on it.

4. Sleeping with wet hair

Sleeping with wet hair is another habit that can cause damage to your locks. When your hair is wet, it's more vulnerable to breakage. If you must sleep with wet hair, be sure to use a silk pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases can absorb the moisture from your hair and cause it to become dry and frizzy.

5. Using too much heat

Even if you're using a heat protectant, you shouldn't use hot tools on your hair daily. The heat can still cause damage, especially if you use it on wet or damp hair. If you must use hot tools, give your hair a break in between and allow it to air dry whenever possible.

6. Rubbing your hair with a towel

Rubbing your hair with a towel is one of the quickest ways to cause damage. When you rub your hair with a towel, you're roughing it up and causing split ends and breakage. Instead, blot your hair with a towel until it's slightly damp. Then, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle it gently.

7. Not trimming your hair regularly

You need to get regular trims if you want healthy, long hair. This may seem counterintuitive, but trimming your hair helps it to grow. When you get rid of split ends and damaged hair, you're giving your locks a chance to start fresh and grow unencumbered. Aim to get a trim every six to eight weeks.

8. Skipping conditioner

Conditioner is just as important as shampoo, yet many people skip it. Conditioner helps to moisturize and protect your hair, especially if you have dry, damaged, or colour-treated hair. Be sure to use a conditioner appropriate for your hair type, and use it every time you shampoo.

9. Using the wrong shampoo and conditioner

This is a common mistake that people make. They either use the wrong shampoo and conditioner for their hair type or products that are too harsh for their hair. If your hair is dry and damaged, look for a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for dry and damaged hair. And be sure to use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove build-up from styling products.

10. Not protecting your hair from the sun

Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from the sun. UV rays can damage your hair, causing it to become dry, brittle, and discoloured. Whenever you are spending time in the sun, be sure to wear a hat or use a leave-in conditioner with UV protection.

Following these tips can help keep your hair healthy and avoid damage. Remember, your hair is fragileso treat it with care!
